Several years ago I came upon the music of Australian Matthew Hindson and was instantly attracted to it. An opportunity to meet the composer arose when he travelled to the UK for the London premiere of his flute concerto which I duly attended and, like most of his compositions, found delightful. We met the next day and discovered enough common ground for us to start talking about a possible collaboration, the result of which was E=mc².

Based on Einstein’s general theory of relativity, the ballet has a symphonic-like structure (Matthew later subtitled the piece his 2nd Symphony) with each of the theory’s components, Energy, Mass and Celeritas, the speed of light, making up a movement, with an interlude entitled Manhattan Project.
